Hans Hofmann - Original Lightprints

Galerie Samuel Lallouz is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition of historic light prints by the artist Hans Hofmann. This collection dates back to the first part of Hofmann's career in Germany. While Hofmann's work during his years in the United States is very well- known, it was actually during the early part of his life when legions of followers were inspired by the artist's creative innovations.

Referring to these images in her Whitney Museum catalog of Hofmann's 1990 retrospective, Cynthia Goodman states: "Hofmann, who rarely ventured into the realm of printmaking, translated a group of portrait heads, including Student with Spectacles (Hofmann no.13xx) into a series of prints using a process called Lichtdruke." Images from the Mediterranean resort of St. Tropez, where his classes were held during the summers of 1928 - 1929, are also included in this collection .

The prints were made using a process where the original drawings are placed directly on top of light sensitive paper. When the light penetrates the onion skin paper, the image of the drawing emerges on the paper below.

This exhibition is open from October 17, 2001 and will continue to the end of December, 2001.
Galerie hours are Tuesday to Friday, 11am-6pm, and Saturday 12 noon -5 pm, or by appointment.
